Xiamen City, abbreviated as “Xia” or “Lu,” is a prefecture-level city, sub-provincial city, and city with independent planning status in Fujian Province. It is a member of the Xiamen-Zhangzhou-Quanzhou metropolitan area and is classified as a Type I large city. Located on the southeastern coast of Fujian Province, its territory comprises the mainland areas along Xiamen Bay in southeastern Fujian, as well as islands such as Xiamen Island and Gulangyu, along with Xiamen Bay itself. The terrain is primarily characterized by coastal plains, terraces, and hills. The city has a South subtropical maritime monsoon climate, featuring mild temperatures and abundant rainfall, with no severe cold in winter or extreme heat in summer. The commonly spoken languages are Min Nan and Mandarin.

In ancient times, Xiamen Island served as a habitat for egrets, hence its alternative name, “Egret Island.” During the Western Jin Dynasty, Tong’an County was established. In the 27th year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1394), Xiamen City was fortified. In 1935, Xiamen City was established; in 1980, the Xiamen Special Economic Zone was established; in 1988, it became a city with independent planning status; and in 1994, it was elevated to a sub-provincial city. Xiamen is a national-level Minnan Cultural Ecological Conservation Area, a Special Economic Zone approved by the State Council, a major central city on China’s southeastern coast, a modern maritime city, an international comprehensive transportation hub, a gateway for opening up to the outside world on the southeastern coast, a regional hub for scientific and technological innovation, an international coastal tourism destination, and a key platform for cross-strait integration, development, and exchange and cooperation. Xiamen has developed a modern industrial system led by the electronics and machinery sectors, with emerging industries such as biomedicine, new materials, and new energy serving as distinctive features.
